Welcome to the Gallery
In 1935, two alcoholics, a stock broker from New York City and a physician from Akron, Ohio met over several cups of coffee and the modern American recovery movement was born. Today, their vision has expanded around the globe and saved the lives of millions who suffer from alcoholism and other substance use disorders and the people who love them. The Suburban North Club is proud to celebrate the rich history of the 12 Step fellowship through The Gallery, a carefully curated collection of historic artifacts that tell the story of the founding and evolution of the 12 Step recovery movement.
The centerpiece of this amazing collection, is the hand notated multilith printing of the original manuscript of “Alcoholics Anonymous”, known by many as the Big Book. In 2012, the Library of Congress designated the book as one of 88 "Books that Shaped America. This manuscript (on loan from the Jim Irsay Collection) is literally covered in the personally handwritten notes and edits of the founders of the fellowship that took its name from this book. It is an inspiration just to be in its presence.
In addition to the original manuscript, The Gallery is home to the Wynot Collection, one of the most extensive libraries of recovery related artifacts in the country. An interactive exhibit is available and you can also purchase a reproduction of the manuscript in our office.
While the original manuscript is often available for viewing, there are times when the manuscript travels to different events, so it is not at the Club at all times. It is recommended to contact SNC to confirm availability and to schedule an appointment. You can also stop by the office and request a tour, 90% of the time a staff member will be able to assist you.
When the manuscript travels, one of the sister multiliths, the only one signed by Bill W himself, is put on display in its place.
