FAQs
What kind of recovery meetings are available at the SNC?
There are currently over 50 recovery meetings held at the SNC every week. Most of our meetings today are 12 step recovery meetings and most of those are AA Meetings. That said, there are several other fellowships like NA, HA, Al-Anon and ACA also represented. You’ll find specific details about each meeting on our current schedule on our Meetings page.
Do I need to sign up for a meeting to attend one?
No. You just need to show up. We are saving a seat for you.
Does it cost anything to attend meetings at the SNC?
There is never a charge to attend any meeting at the SNC. Those who consider themselves members of a specific fellowship, usually put a dollar or two in the donation basket or make a donation via Venmo to cover the group’s expenses. This donation, however, is always optional. You are more important to us than your money.
What is the difference between “open” & “closed” meetings?
Open meetings may be attended by anyone. As an example, Open AA meetings are obviously focused on alcoholism but people who identify as having some other addiction, are welcome to attend. So are family members, friends, people who are curious about whether or not they are actually alcoholic or medical professionals and students looking to learn about the disease. Closed AA meetings are restricted only to individuals who identify as alcoholics. Most of the meetings currently at the SNC are open meetings.
Are children welcome at the SNC?
Though we offer no programming or designated play areas for children, they may accompany their parent to the SNC as long as they are closely supervised.
Many open meetings allow children to attend but please keep in mind that the subject matter in these meetings may not be appropriate for children to hear. Parents should check with other attendees of the specific meeting to learn their policy for admitting children. Children who do attend meetings are expected to do so quietly.
Our staff is not trained to offer child care or first aid and we do not have a designated child care area in the building. There are, however, baby changing stations located in each of our club’s restrooms.
Is the SNC run by Alcoholics Anonymous?
Absolutely not. The Suburban North Club is a 501c3 non-profit organization that provides a safe place for folks in recovery to meet, socialize and encourage each other. Many of our members and other friends are members of AA and/or some other 12 Step fellowship. That said, the SNC is not owned by or affiliated with any 12 Step fellowship. We do our best to run our business in alignment with the principles of these 12 Step programs but we do not speak for them, nor they for us.
Is the SNC a treatment center?
No. There are lots of organizations that are in the business of providing detox services, residential and outpatient treatment and medically assisted treatment. We provide none of these acute care services. We are often a first stop for folks when they come out of treatment and are ready to start getting their lives back on track.
Is the SNC accepting new meetings or groups?
Absolutely! If you have an idea for a new meeting, or if your group is looking for a new home after losing a meeting site during the pandemic, reach out to our Meetings chairperson at: officemanager@suburbannorthclub.org
